And Things to Consider Before Doing So
By Dawn Greer
Women know inherently that anything that boys can do, we can do as well, if not better. While women don’t have the brute strength that is sometimes required for certain jobs, they have the ability to organize and think outside of the box in ways that enable them to get jobs done without muscles. My father used to tell me, “If you work smart, you don’t have to work hard.” This is true and I learn more about what he meant with each day that goes by.
So, while you may not be able to carry 5-gallons of water in a bucket at one time, you can figure out ways to move it. You can read and learn to do things that will enable you to pump your own water and create your own power. You can do anything that you set out to do and more women than ever before are setting out to live off the land, all on their own.
It Won’t Be Easy
This probably goes without saying, but you should expect everything that can possibly go wrong to do just that. Plan everything out on paper, from water resources to power options. Know that you will be faced with challenges at every single stage of the game. If you are someone who can roll with the flow; if you have an attitude of ‘get ‘er done’ rather than sitting around and moping, then you’ll have what it takes to be successful.
Always Have a Plan B, and a C, and a D, and …
You will inevitably find that you thought you’d researched every possibility and you still have an issue that arises. How will you handle it? For example, if you installed your own solar panels and you wake one morning to find they are not charging, do you have a power back-up plan? Can you go without power until you solve the problem? Are you capable of problem-solving until you find the problem? Can you afford to pay someone to fix it for you?
It is possible to learn how to do these things and the first thing you have to let go of is fear. The worst thing that can happen is that you don’t get something fixed. If you try to fix it, you’ve got a 50/50 shot at figuring out the issue and solving the problem. Many times, women allow fear to stop them in their tracks and keep them from trying things. This is a matter of not having self-confidence. Once you’ve tried something and been successful, your confidence swells until you are finding yourself trying out all sorts of things that are outside of your comfort zone.

Believe That You Can
While it is true that you may not have the strength to lift building materials over your head, that doesn’t mean that you can’t figure out how to get them in place. A block and tackle, with a horse or a car attached to a chain, can lift anything in place for you and you might make more trips with a smaller bucket, but you can get any job done.
Your mind is just as capable of problem-solving and that is the thing you must remember. Where there is a will, there is a way and with so much information available on the internet, and groups on social media to help answer off-grid questions, there is no reason at all not to try things for yourself.
Many women are building small homes and making a place for themselves and small children post-divorce. Some younger women are deciding to do their own thing before committing to a life of marriage and children. Other women are widowed with grown children who just want a peaceful place to call home that is all theirs, without bills.
The first step you need to take is believing in yourself and deciding that this is what you are going to do. Commit to it, take notes, read everything you can find about living off the grid, and then take the leap of faith. You’ll be glad you joined so many Women Living Off The Land.
