Pittman Outdoors designs mattresses for a wide range of circumstances. James Pittman, the owner was inspired to design the AirBedz mattress by uncomfortable nights spent on a regular air mattress in the back of his truck. I was excited by the chance to review one of the mattresses in their catalog. Airbedz mattresses come in many shapes and sizes making the decision difficult. My choices included mattresses that would fit in the back seat of our pickup, in the box of the pickup, or the back of my Outback. I’ve never camped in my vehicle on purpose but have migrated to my car on nights with questionable weather and often if I’m tenting it alone. Due to this, I have wondered if I should just plan on sleeping in my vehicle at times. When camping with our kids when they were younger the car was often a getaway spot for someone who had just had too much together time. I decided I would try out the Airbedz XUV Mattress in my Outback.
My Airbedz XUV experience
I received a tan mattress. It is 60 inches long and 52 inches at the widest (43 inches at the tailgate to accommodate the vehicle. The mattress is 10 inches deep. The mattress has a built-in pump with a rechargeable battery. The battery states it should be charged 8 hours for every 20 minutes of use and you can also choose to order a DC cord for charging within your vehicle. The mattress has a comfort coil system to distribute weight and is made of heavy-duty laminated fabric. It also comes with a handy carrying bag for storage.
How It Fit
The Airbedz XUV mattress arrived in February, which in Minnesota, is outside my comfort zone for sleeping in a vehicle. While I would welcome the excuse for a road trip to a warmer area it just didn’t fit our schedule. Thankfully, it did warm up enough that I was able to try the mattress out in a couple of different vehicles. In my Subaru Outback, the fit was fantastic. There was plenty of room to spare once I put the seats down. There was a slight incline in the seats when in the down position but it was hardly noticeable with the mattress on top of it. Climbing in was easy with the low profile of the car.
I also tried it out in a Ford Escape. The fit was a little bit closer but once the front seats were moved forward there was plenty of room. Climbing in was a bit tougher as it was higher up and there was less headroom. The folded-down rear seats also had more of an incline. Besides this, it was still a comfortable fit.

The battery required overnight charging before the first use so I did this right away. To use the mattress, I simply unfolded the mattress in the back of the vehicle and turned the pump on to inflate the mattress. It took less than 1 minute to inflate it. When I was finished, I simply turned the pump to deflate and it took just a tiny bit longer to deflate the mattress. The air was completely sucked out making it super easy to fold up and toss it back into the storage bag. I was pleased the bag was large enough to place the mattress back into after it had been unfolded and used. I inflated it and deflated it 8 times total and the battery is still going strong.
Comfort
The coil system distributes weight evenly through the mattress. Getting into the vehicle required a bit of a hop and I expected to bounce around but felt secure as I settled on to the mattress. Even with the slight incline, I did not slip off of it. I added a flat sheet over the top and that stayed in place.
Durability
Airbedz are advertised with pictures of a dog on the mattresses and built for durability. I’ve seen many air mattresses destroyed by the quick hop of a pup so I was curious to try this out. I was not brave enough to let my pup loose on the mattress directly, her nail care is a constant battle and I would not expect any air mattress to hold up to her nails, but I did have her try it out with a sheet on top of the mattress and it held up to her one-year-old pup antics. I left the mattress inflated in my car for two days as the temps ranged from 15-40 degrees Fahrenheit and the little air it lost with the temperature difference just needed a ten-second pump up. I deflated the mattress at 20 degrees to put it away, though a little stiff, it held up well. I was also pleased the battery still held a strong enough charge to deflate the mattress in the cold with no sign of dying.
Airbedz XUV Mattress – My Recommendation
I cannot wait for warmer weather to truly enjoy this mattress. It will make it easy to sleep in my vehicle while on long road trips. The mattress is hassle-free to set up and take down and does not take up much room for storage. The battery-operated pump makes it a breeze to use. I would want the ability to charge it in the car when taking it on trips. The cost of this mattress is less than the price of an average hotel room and adds considerable comfort to a night in the car. If you are looking to add comfort to a Jeep, SUV, or Crossover this is a great option. You can also check out their other options for truck beds, backseats, and camping at https://truckairbedz.com/.
