One of the things I love about camping is a dark and quiet beautiful night’s sleep. A few years ago I was so excited for a Memorial Day tenting trip, I had big plans for a deep night’s sleep. Unfortunately, for sleep, there was the most amazing full moon that weekend and it never got dark. I remember lying awake all night wishing I had a sleep mask along. When asked to try out the Beanie Sleeper I immediately thought of this night. I normally sleep in a hat both when camper and tent camping in the spring and fall as the nights are still cold. This could be a great combo.
What is the Beanie Sleeper?
The Beanie Sleeper was dreamed up while the creator, Ben, was in the hospital dealing with a cold head and a busy room. It is made of soft cotton fleece with a layer of netting on the inside. The hat has a brim with a built-in eye mask. You simply pull the hat down over your eyes for a dark night’s sleep without any uncomfortable straps.
The hat arrived in just a few days in a plastic shipping bag and a plastic bag over the hat. The tag on the hat describes how to use it. Our corner bedroom gets pretty chili in the winter on a windy night the week the hat arrived was a very windy week. I was excited to give it a shot. We also had a full moon with snow on the ground meaning that even with room darkening curtains our room never got very dark.
How Did It Fit and Work?
The hat was comfortable, it was loose but it stayed put as I read in bed and walked around the house a little. You wear the Beanie Sleeper with the brim folded up so it does not cover anything but your eyes on your face. When I first tried it on I thought you pulled it down over your nose and was a little concerned but then I read the very detailed visual directions and put it on the correct way. )The fabric is very soft and breathable. The netting on the inside is intended to prevent overheating but I also found it kept my hair in check while wearing the hat.
I wore for a few very chilly nights when the wind really drove down the temperature of our bedroom. It stayed put as Ia drifted off the sleep but I found it fell off at some point during the night each night. I am a pretty wild sleeper so this does not surprise me, I’ve had the same issue with other sleep masks. I wondered if it would make a difference if the hat was a bit smaller as I am able to keep hats on while sleeping.

My Review
The hat was comfortable but it was large on me, to be fair I do prefer tighter-fitting hats in general. It fit my son and husband perfectly. It kept me warm while sleeping and blocked light pretty well. If it fit me correctly I could definitely see it as an asset to have when camping in locations with lights or when the moon is bright. I will keep it in my camper for those days we stay at less than ideal locations while traveling. If you can keep it on the netting inside could be a great asset to keeping the bed head under control.
I had hoped it could also serve double duty as a stocking hat for cold evenings when camping but I found it was slightly awkward to wear like that, mainly because of the bulk of the eye pads and the largeness of the hat. It would work in an emergency but I am pretty quick to throw mine on and would prefer my normal stocking hats. If you are looking for a hat to sleep in for warmth with the added benefit of blocking light the Beanie Sleeper is a great option, especially if you have a larger head than mine. I can certainly see the benefits for flights, hospital flights, and more.
I had some fun with the beanie sleeper when I tried to take a picture of myself in it. I realized I looked like one of those eyeless gnomes so popular with crafters in the United States these days. I had to get my bearded husband to try this out and decided turning my husband into a gnome significantly increased my opinion of this product. This may be the perfect gift for bearded significant others, they will not even be able to see your giggle if you chose not to share the silliness.
In all seriousness though, the creator of this unique product, Ben, created a short and helpful video tutorial about the Beannie Sleeper which I have included below:
